AT&T is making effort to complete deals in Cuba to benefit from the shift in the US foreign policy.
At least three huge American companies – AT&T, Marriot International, Starwood Hotels & Resorts – worldwide are trying to complete their deals in Cuba as President of the United States Barak Obama gets ready to visit the Cuban capital Havana, a person aware of the deliberations stated on March 11, 2016. The flurry of deal-making could allow Obama to use his historical March 20 to March 22 visit to demonstrate what he views as the advantages of the diplomatic opening of Washington with the former cold war after years of hostility.
No president of the United States has visited Cuba in approximately nine decades. Even as Obama gets ready to introduce further steps soon to lift decades-old restrictions on travel and trade to Cuba, the long lasting United States economic embargo imposes limits by US companies to run their businesses on the island.
AT&T is trying to complete a mobile communications deal with the Cuban telecom, while American hotel company, Starwood, also weighs an announcement, which was revealed by company and administration officials.
AT&T refused to comment. Obama might also schedule other visits for the agreements. Details were not immediately available. MLB has had discussions with the Government of Cuba and US looks for ways to allow big-league teams to sign players of Cuba without them having to defect.
Officials of White House were not immediately available to share views. While a large number of American companies take interest in the Cuban market, most have not been able to benefit from the US initiative. They continued to be hemmed by over 50-years-old embargo and worried about the failure of Cuban government to enact important economic reforms.
US airlines hurried to file applications for the routes to the region but general tourism and other types of business transactions is still banned by the embargo. Obama has called to lift the embargo but Republicans controlling both chambers and Congress can only do that. However, they have refused to take action.
Republican critics of Obama have alleged him of providing a lot for getting too little from Government of Cuba and not considering human rights issues to pursue rapprochement with the country, which started in December two years ago. It is now being currently viewed as a significant component of his foreign affairs policy legacy.
Officials at White House have countered the claim of Republicans by stating that country’s outreach aims to help ordinary Cuban citizens while providing commercial opportunities to the citizens of the US.
